INDIVIDUALS 

Andrew Bales, the General Director and President of Symphony San Jose, will retire after nearly twenty years at the end of the 2021-22 season. The San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs presented him with the Cornerstone of the Arts Award in October 2021.

The San Francisco Symphony appointed Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser as Resident Conductor of Engagement and Education.

Connor Bogenrief left the Long Beach Symphony to accept a position at Chapman University as the Career Advisor for the College of Performing Arts.

Camille Delaney-McNeil, Director of the Beckmen YOLA Center at the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Martha Gilmer, CEO of the San Diego Symphony; and Nancy Laturno, CEO of Mainly Mozart were recognized in Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of 2021.

Richard Egarr made his first bay area appearance since his appointment as Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale’s Music Director at the season-opening concert in October 2021.

Redlands Bowl’s longtime conductor, Frank Paul Fetta, passed away in October 2021.

The Board of Directors of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera announced that Giuliano Kornberg, the organization's Chief Revenue and Development Officer, will succeed Alice Sauro as Executive Director beginning February 1, 2022.

The Reno Chamber Orchestra’s Executive Director, Thom Mayes, has stepped down.

Alasdair Neale, Music Director of the Marin Symphony since 2001, announced that after two more concert seasons, he will end his tenure with the Symphony upon the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season. 

Anthony Parnther, Music Director and Conductor of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, was appointed as the new Gateways music director and conductor beginning April 24, 2022. Parnther will take the place of Michael Morgan, who passed away in August 2021.

The Santa Cruz Symphony hired Gary Reece as Executive Director.

Steven Schick will step down as Music Director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, a position he has held for 15 years, at the end of the 2021-22 season.

The Modesto Symphony and the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) welcomed Wayland Whitney as the MSYO’s Symphony Orchestra Conductor.

Naomi Wilson, Director of Finance at the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera, was named one of the Sacramento Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” young professionals in 2021.

ORGANIZATIONS 

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced the completion of its new executive team with the hiring of Emanuel Maxwell as its Chief Talent & Equity Officer and the promotion of Summer Bjork to Chief of Staff and Daniel Song to Chief Operating Officer. 

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's recording of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 was nominated for two 2022 Grammy® Awards in the categories of “Best Choral Performance” and “Best Engineered Album, Classical”.

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra received a $2 million gift from the Paramo family - the largest donation the orchestra has received in its 93-year history.

The San Francisco Symphony’s recordings on the orchestra’s in-house SFS Media Label were nominated for two 2022 Grammy® Awards. The live-concert recording of Alban Berg: Violin Concerto, Seven Early Songs, & Three Pieces for Orchestra was nominated in the category of Best Classical Compendium, and the recording of Nico Muhly’s Throughline, was nominated in the category of Best Orchestral Performance.

The San Francisco Symphony announced two upcoming changes to its orchestra roster. After forty years as Principal Harp of the San Francisco Symphony, Douglas Rioth retired at the end of 2021. After thirty-one seasons as Associate Concertmaster, Nadya Tichman has decided to continue her tenure with San Francisco Symphony as a revolving member of the 1st Violin section beginning with the 2022-23 season.

Kyle Dickson, Molly Turner, and Ross Jamie Collins were selected to join the conducting staff of the San Francisco Symphony in an extension of their work as Salonen Fellows in the Colburn School Conservatory of Music’s Negaunee Conducting Program.

The Santa Rosa Symphony added two new directors to its administrative staff. Eman Isadiar is the symphony's new Director of Development and Brenda Fox has been promoted to Director of Marketing and Patron Services.
